Communication Crazy

On Thursday 23 August, Rooms 2,3 and 5 went to the Police Headquarters and St John's Ambulance Service. The purpose of the trip was to learn more about our topic 'Communication'. Room 3 and half of Room 5 went to the St John Ambulance Service first, while the rest of Room 5 and Room 2 went to the Police Headquarters. All of the equipment looked really interesting. At the Police Headquarters there was a special computer that if you type in your address, you can see your house. At the St John Ambulance Service there was a room called The Fishbowl where you can see the staff taking emergency calls. In between the two trips we had lunch by the Christchurch Garden Fountain. Then we walked to the Botanical Gardens for a play!

BOTTLED BIRD BONANZA

Why don't you check out our bottled birds? They are on the windowsill of room 5 and you can see them best if you walk past around the back of Room 5.
Over the past few weeks we have been making bottled birds. We used plastic drink bottles. We added a stomach and a head made of newspaper. We paper mached over that and then we painted the birds and then we added the details. We got some parents in to help sticking details on with the hot glue gun. Some of us got a bit burnt!!!
We all think our birds deserve ten out of ten, or even eleven out of ten. What do you think?
Honor and Brennan took some photos of people's bottle birds. In the photos, some people are holding birds that they didn't make.

KIDS WATCHING KIDS!

This afternoon we have been looking at blog sites from rooms at West melton School. We looked at some really great sites and saw lots of interesting stuff.
We really liked the look of the models that the children in Room 1 have made - great work, Room 1. It will be great when it is all looking nice out the back of Rooms 1 and 2 - we wanted it to look nice and be a fun place to be when we were in those rooms!
We also thought that the pourquoi stories that the children in Room 10 have been reading were very interesting. Perhaps you can tell us more about them at buddy reading time, Room 10.
Room 4, we liked your blogsite and your photos, but you have to admit, we're a better-looking bunch than you!
Check out our blogsite tomorrow and you will see some cool photos - but we're not going to tell you what they are, you will have to check them out tomorrow!
Meanwhile, here are some photos of us checking out all the blogsites this afternoon.

JUMPING AND JAMMING

We've been learning lots of new dances lately in Jump Jam, eg. I'm a Believer (The Shrek song) and Chori Chori. We usually do Jump Jam at about quarter to twelve every day except Fridays and Wednesdays. Sometimes different classes get up and lead us along with the beat and the moves. All the classes in the Moa Team are all bobbing along to the music. Even the teachers join in!It is a fun way to get fit. If you are from another school and you are reading this, then maybe you should consider doing it at your school. Here are some photos of the Moa Team dancing along at Jump Jam time.

AIR TRAFFIC CONTROL

On Monday 6 August, Ms Taylor came in to talk to us about air traffic controlling, and how air traffic controllers communicate. They use radar and satellites to communicate. They have a special alphabet that the pilots and the air traffic controllers use - it is called the phonetic alphabet and some examples are Charlie for C and India for I and Tango for T. They use it for the planes' call signs. It is important that they communicate right so that the planes don't collide or crash. It was really interesting listening to Mrs Taylor and seeing the information on her computer through the data projector. You have to be 21 to be an air traffic controller, but you can start training at 19.

FUN FRIDAY FITNESS

We go out for fitness and today we played Rob the Nest. You are in teams and you have hoops and balls. You have to try and get as many balls as you can, when your number is called. You have to be careful not to fall over because it really hurts when you fall over. Logan went sliding today!

MULTIPLICATION MADNESS!!!

Here are some kids from Learning Community 5 playing Multiplication Bingo with their class. The teacher calls out the numbers and you have to cover up what the equation is, with your counters. It helps us to remember our times tables facts.

Let's Get Thinking

This afternoon, Room 5 has been thinking of questions to ask the staff at our school about communication. It was quite hard, because you need to think of open questions and then think of categories for possible answers. One example of a question was: What do you use your computer for? A) emails B) internet C) games D) all of these.
Next week, we will ask the staff our questions and compare our answers from the different staff.

Room 5 Ripped It Out

Over the last couple of weeks we have been playing rippa rugby. We learned quite a lot of techniques, such as holding and passing the ball properly. It is safer than tackle rugby but some of us think that it is not as much fun!Lee Golding from Canterbury Rugby is a great coach!

Maths Time

Check out some of the Room 5 gang working on their maths maintenance and basic facts. Sorry about the quality of the photo, Bradley and James!

What Happened in Room 5 on Tuesday 31 July?

One thing that happened was that the children from Room 5 worked on the model birds they are making. They covered plastic drink bottles with paper mache and made paper heads and tummies for the birds. Now they are covering the models with plain white paper. Next it will be time to paint and decorate the models, and add feathers, eyes, etc. Check out the photo of some of the Room 5 boys working on their models.
